LONDON — Novelis Inc. has pushed up the price of its automotive sheet in Europe by €160 ($208) per tonne across its product range, the company said July 10.

“The price increase announced today reflects the strong demand for our automotive sheet products, which has resulted in a prevailing tight supply situation,” Roland Harings, vice president of Novelis’ global automotive business, said in a statement.

“In response to this demand, we are expanding our capacity to meet growing customer requirements for high-volume delivery of Novelis aluminum for a new generation of lighter-weight vehicles.”

Novelis recently expanded its automotive sheet production capacity in Europe by adapting its Goettingen plant in Germany to produce 20,000 tonnes of sheet per year (, May 24). The company also produces automotive sheet in Nachterstedt, Germany, and Sierre, Switzerland.

“In addition to this expansion in Europe, we have new automotive sheet expansions under way in Oswego, New York, and Changzhou, China, to serve our customers’ rapidly expanding global needs,” Harings said.

Novelis said that the aluminum automotive sheet market is growing at a rate of 25 percent per year. It sells aluminum for use in automotive applications such as body panels, tailgates, roofs and vehicle structures.
