June steel shipments down 3%

NEW YORK — U.S. steel shipments continued to slide in June, according to the latest American Iron and Steel Institute data.

U.S. steel mills shipped just over 7.8 million net tons in June, down 3 percent from 8.05 million tons the previous month and 2.6 percent lower than 8.02 million tons in June last year.

Hot-rolled sheet shipments were down 2 percent from May, while shipments of hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip and cold-rolled sheet each fell 5 percent.

Domestic mills shipped 47.4 million tons of steel through the first six months of this year, down 5.4 percent from 50.1 million tons in the same period in 2012.
