Cliffs names Halverson president

NEW YORK — Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. has appointed Gary Halverson president and chief operating officer effective Nov. 18.

Joseph Carrabba will retire as president and chief executive officer Nov. 15 and also will step down as a director. Carrabba joined Cliffs in 2005 as president and chief operating officer, became president and chief executive officer in 2006 and was elected chairman in 2007.

Cleveland-based Cliffs also named the non-executive chairman of its board of directors, James Kirsh, as executive chairman.

Halverson, who had been interim chief operating officer at Barrick Gold Corp. Inc., has more than 30 years’ international mining and management experience in the gold, copper and nickel mining industries. He will report to Kirsch.
