US steel mill shipments decline

NEW YORK — U.S. steel mills shipped nearly 7.88 million net tons in September, down 5.6 percent from more than 8.34 million tons the previous month but up 8.9 percent from 7.23 million tons in September last year, American Iron and Steel Institute data show.

Year-to-date shipments of 71.9 million tons were down 2.4 percent from 73.64 million tons in the first nine months of last year.

September shipments of hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip slid 4 percent vs. August, hot-rolled sheet fell 5 percent and cold-rolled sheet slipped 5 percent.
